Olympic Afternoon & Valentine's Day Party
Yesterday afternoon, our students went to the gym for CCS's Olympic opening ceremonies - with a special appearance from the mascots 'Snowflake' (Miss Kranabetter) and 'Ray of Light' (Mr. Klaponski). Then our students were divided into 2 groups, led by Mrs. Kozak and Mrs. Palha, students and their Grade 5/6 buddies went around 11 different classrooms to try 11 different Olympic sports. Our classroom was set up for the 'Freestyle Skiing' so students had to hop around the obstacle course (around tables and chairs). Other activities included speed skating, biathlon, curling, skeleton, figure skating and table top hockey - the students had a great time and they all felt like champions!
Today, we had a busy morning with yummy cookie decorating (thanks Gabriel!) and then to Mrs. Lemire's classroom for a Valentine craft (see pipe cleaner person) in their Valentine's envelope. We had an early snack of popcorn, recess (extra 5 mins!) then PE immediately afterwards. All of the students entered the drawing & colouring contest, initiated by today's student principals Wyatt and Kaden, and it seems like Minecraft characters are very popular right now!
In the afternoon, students watched 'Madagascar 3' with the rest of the school in the gym - it was a nice calm activity before sending off them off for an extra long weekend. Thanks to Riley for the mini Valentine cupcakes and for everyone who gave Valentines to the class. Please check your child's Valentine's envelope for my 'present!'
In the last week, I have received several emails asking about next year's (Grade 1 class) classes. Please check Mr. Borkowski's blog for his thoughts on this important topic http://catholicprincipal.wordpress.com/

Busy Week
This week, the students worked hard on the various art projects that compliment our Eric Carle author study. We read 'The Grouchy Ladybug' 'The Tiny Seed' 'The Rabbit and the Turtle' and 'Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?'
Thank you to Mr. Markowsky, who came in on Thursday afternoon, to teach the students about being a computer programmer. The students were really excited to see the inside of the computer and to learn about the brain (CPU) of the computer.

Student Led Conference forms
Today the student led conference forms were sent home with the oldest child in each family. These forms are due on Friday, February 7th. If you have any questions about these conferences, please email me.
The weather has been extremely cold so please send your child with a winter jacket (no hoodies or thin jackets please!), toques and gloves/mittens. Girls should be wearing tights under their tunics. It is simply too cold for them to wear socks!
If your child has a cold, please keep them home in order to rest and get better. Please send an email to the school office to notify them of your child's absence.
We are in desperate need for more Kleenex in our classroom - if you are able, please send one box with your child tomorrow.

Popcorn Confusion & Goat Update
My apologies about the confusion with popcorn day this week. Normally, popcorn day happens on the last Wednesday of each month but was changed to Wed, Feb 13th in conjunction with the African Colour Day (fundraising for mission trip). I will keep the popcorn money for students who sent money in on Wednesday so please don't send any more money for Feb 13th.
Our class has now raised $50 - enough for a goat! Thank you for all your donations!

100 Day Project
The hundredth day of school will be Monday, February 17th. We are planning a big celebration. This homework assignment is in preparation for this event.
Step 1
Brainstorm with your family, items you could collect in quantities of 100. (Example: 100 cotton balls, 100 pennies, 100 erasers, 100 noodles, or 100 stickers)
Step 2
Choose something from your list and gather 100 of that item.
Step 3
Create and design a unique way to display your collection. Poster board, construction paper or cardboard work well.
Step 4
Attach your collection to your display board.
Step5
Bring it to school by Tuesday, February 11th
